Johnny
Browning
Jul 19, 1940 — Apr 12, 2026
Johnny Harold Browning, 85, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, passed away on April 12, 2026.
Born on July 19, 1940, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, John was the son of Johnny Arthur Browning and Shirley Fikes Browning. After graduating from Pine Bluff High School and attending Mississippi College, he returned home to continue the legacy built by his family. He became the owner and operator of Arthur's Bar‑B‑Que, the beloved restaurant founded by his father and a Pine Bluff landmark for more than 75 years. Under John's leadership, Arthur's remained one of the most well‑known barbecue restaurants in Southeast Arkansas, a place where stories were shared, friendships were made, and the community gathered around stools filled with tradition.
John married Virginia Marshall Browning on May 12, 1973, at First Methodist Church in Monticello, Arkansas. Together they built a life rooted in faith, service, and deep devotion to their family.
A lifelong Methodist, John dedicated more than 50 years to church music ministry. He served as Director of Music and Organist for several congregations, including First Methodist Monticello, Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church, Wesley United Methodist Church, Good Faith‑Carr United Methodist Church, and Faith Community Church, where he continued to play until very recently.John was a beloved and active member of the Pine Bluff community. He cherished directing combined church choirs and valued his time serving on the Pine Bluff Advertising and Promotion Board. He especially enjoyed visiting with people about Arthur's Bar‑B‑Que and hearing how much the restaurant meant to generations of families in the area.
John and Virginia raised two sons, Christopher and Philip, and he took great joy in watching them play sports throughout their childhood. He was often found working the concession stand, cheering from the sidelines, or simply being present — a steady, loving father. His greatest pride, however, was his five grandchildren: Casey, Austin, Mollie Kate, Addyson, and Marshall. Being part of their lives brought him immeasurable joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny (Arthur) and Shirley (Dean) Browning.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia Browning; his sons, Christopher (Lindsey) Browning and William Philip Browning; his sister, Peggy Fitzhugh; his brother, Freddie (Susan) Browning; and his five beloved grandchildren: Casey (Kennedy) Moon, Austin Browning, Mollie Kate Browning, Addyson Browning, and Marshall Browning.
A visitation memorial will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Faith Community Church, 3703 Ryburn Road, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, for all who wish to visit with John's family and friends and celebrate the life of a beloved husband, father, "Papa," and friend.
